Feeling Lucky Review – The Fringe at Its Best

Spread the love

Playwright Stephen Fife has a peculiar – and very funny – way of looking at today’s relationships, or lack thereof. As potential lovers warily circle each other, each afraid to let the other in on what is going on in his head, opportunities to find love blossom…or circle the drain. In professional theater for over 40 years as an actor, playwright, featured writer, director, producer, and literary manager, Fife has probably seen it all – and then some. His idiosyncratic view of love, loss, and everything in between will delight audiences looking for a well-written fringe view of the world.

And let’s not forget the actors who bring Fife’s vignettes alive with humor and warmth. Playing multiple roles in this little taste of upcoming show themes are the talented and professional cast, including Courtney Scheuerman, Tarah Pollock, Spencer Weitzel, and Eddie Navarro, who play ill-fated – but sometimes lucky – participants in the dance of love. Each offers an amusing, poignant, lonely, and lost individual trying his best to make it in the dating game. Artfully directed by Yuval Shrem, who knows his way around the stage, the cast breathe life into each of their characters.

Fringe staging is simple – in this case, only a table, a couple of chairs, and a movable “bar.” Lighting is also spotty. But it’s the cleverly penned and helmed tales told by capable working actors that will captivate. Each few-minute scenario could easily be expanded into a fascinating full-length play – but only the future knows the destiny of these tiny snippets of contemporary life. If you’re FEELING LUCKY, you might enjoy seeing the Fringe at its best.
